Hiring Made Simple, Seamless, and Smart
CEO,
SmartRecruiters
The hiring landscape in the United States has long been riddled with challenges: talent shortages, lengthy hiring cycles, outdated applicant tracking systems, and an ever-evolving job market that demands agility. For many businesses, hiring has felt like an uphill battle, filled with inefficiencies and frustration. But Rebecca Carr, CEO of SmartRecruiters, is rewriting the script. Under Rebecca’s leadership, SmartRecruiters has introduced cutting-edge technology that simplifies recruitment, making it intuitive, fast, and more humancentric. By leveraging AI, automation, and seamless integrations, she has transformed how businesses attract and retain top talent. “Recruiting tools should simplify hiring, not complicate it,” she says. “The best technology meets people where they already work.”
Rebecca’s journey to becoming a leader in HR technology began with a deep passion for people and problem-solving. Her academic background is as impressive as her career trajectory—she attended the University of California, Berkeley, before honing her business acumen at Harvard Business School. Her career kicked off with roles at Glocap Search and MEInc, where she gained firsthand experience in the complexities of recruiting. As a consultant and associate, she saw the disconnect between companies and top talent, inspiring her to find innovative solutions to bridge the gap. Her next career move took her to Playdom, where she served as an HR Business Partner, helping the gaming company scale before its acquisition by Disney in 2010. At Disney Interactive Media Group, she expanded her expertise in product management, blending HR and technology in ways that would shape her future leadership.
Rebecca briefly stepped away from SmartRecruiters to join Checkr, a background check and employment verification platform. As GM of Checkr Pay and Chief of Staff to the CEO, she spearheaded initiatives that modernized wage access and improved background screening efficiency. This experience deepened her understanding of hiring roadblocks and reinforced her mission to build smarter, fairer hiring processes.
One of Rebecca’s key insights is that hiring should be effortless. She acknowledges that many hiring managers dislike logging into their ATS to provide feedback. “I just want to do it in Slack or on my phone,” she says. By prioritizing user experience, SmartRecruiters now enables hiring teams to operate within the platforms they already use, such as Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Beyond technology, she is redefining hiring culture. She emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), ensuring that AI-driven hiring remains ethical and unbiased. By reducing friction in the hiring process, SmartRecruiters helps companies reach a broader and more diverse talent pool.
Rebecca Carr’s journey reflects the power of vision, innovation, and relentless execution. She has transformed SmartRecruiters into a platform that doesn’t just manage hiring but elevates it into a seamless, user-friendly, and intelligent process. “We’re back,” she declares with confidence, signaling not just a return to SmartRecruiters but a renewed commitment to revolutionizing the way businesses hire. With Rebecca at the helm, the future of recruitment is brighter, smarter, and more human than ever before.
Rebecca’s influence in HR tech deepened when she joined BranchOut as Director of Product for Consumer & Enterprise, where she helped create professional networking solutions. She later moved to Jobvite, taking on leadership roles that focused on analytics, APIs, and integrations—critical components in building flexible and scalable recruitment solutions. In 2014, she joined SmartRecruiters, marking the beginning of a decade-long impact. Initially serving as VP of Product, she played a pivotal role in defining the company’s strategic roadmap. Over the years, she held multiple leadership positions, including VP of Solutions Consulting and SVP of Growth, each role sharpening her vision for the future of hiring technology.
In July 2023, Rebecca returned to SmartRecruiters, stepping into the role of Chief Product Officer before being appointed CEO. Her leadership comes at a crucial time when businesses are demanding more from their recruitment technology—more automation, better integrations, and a truly seamless experience.
She envisions SmartRecruiters as more than just an applicant tracking system; it’s a “recruiting workflow orchestration engine.” Her API-first strategy allows organizations to customize hiring processes to fit their unique needs. “If I could snap my fingers and do one thing to SmartRecruiters right now, I would make it 100% API-able,” she says. This level of flexibility ensures businesses can integrate recruitment into their existing workflows without disruption.
Rebecca is a respected voice in the industry, frequently speaking at conferences and sharing insights on the future of hiring. As a member of Pavilion, an exclusive network for CEOs and founders, she continues to exchange ideas with other top executives on scaling businesses effectively. Her impact extends beyond work—she is a triathlete, a dedicated mom of two daughters, and an advocate for work-life integration. Balancing a demanding career with personal passions, she embodies the adaptability and resilience that define great leaders.
