Blending Tech and Human Touch to Reinvent USA’s Retail
CEO,
Best Buy
The U.S. retail landscape has been a battlefield of change, where shifting consumer behaviors, the rise of e-commerce, and economic volatility have tested even the most resilient businesses. In an era where shopping has become increasingly digital, maintaining a balance between technological convenience and human connection is a challenge many retailers struggle with. Yet, Best Buy has not only survived but thrived, thanks to the visionary leadership of Corie Barry. As CEO of Best Buy, Corie has orchestrated a remarkable transformation, blending cutting-edge technology with a deeply humanized customer experience. Under her leadership, the company has evolved from a brick-and-mortar electronics retailer into a tech-driven services provider that prioritizes personalized shopping experiences. “We humanize technology,” Corie once said. “It’s not just about the SKU and the speeds and feeds… It’s about what you want to do.”
Corie Barry’s journey to the top of the retail world was anything but conventional. A native of Minnesota, she honed her financial acumen at Deloitte & Touche LLP, where she worked as a senior auditor. It was here that she developed the analytical rigor and strategic mindset that would later define her leadership at Best Buy. In 1999, Corie joined Best Buy, marking the beginning of a two-decade-long career ascent through a variety of leadership roles in finance, strategy, and operations. From her early days as a senior financial analyst to her tenure as Chief Financial Officer, Corie demonstrated an exceptional ability to drive financial health while fostering innovation. Her keen understanding of numbers, coupled with a deep appreciation for customer experience, set her apart.
In 2019, Corie became the first female CEO of Best Buy, assuming leadership at a time of immense retail disruption. E-commerce was booming, consumer expectations were evolving, and brick-and-mortar stores faced an existential crisis. Rather than resisting change, Corie embraced it, launching a series of bold initiatives that redefined Best Buy’s role in the industry.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed one of the greatest challenges in Best Buy’s history. Under Corie’s leadership, the company swiftly pivoted to a new operating model, leveraging curbside pickup, virtual consultations, and enhanced delivery services. Best Buy’s ability to adapt so quickly was a direct result of Corie’s forward-thinking leadership. “One of our core values is learning from challenge and change,” she noted, crediting her team for their resilience.
Corie’s influence extends far beyond Best Buy. As Chairwoman of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), an Executive Committee Member of The Business Council U.S., and a Board Member of Business Roundtable, she actively shapes the future of retail and corporate leadership. Her insights into balancing technological innovation with workforce empowerment have made her a sought-after voice in the industry.
Corie’s rise within Best Buy was a testament to her adaptability and strategic vision. Holding numerous key positions, including VP, CFO and Business Development – Home Business Group, EVP and Chief Strategic Growth Officer, and EVP and Chief Financial Officer, she played a crucial role in steering the company through financial and operational transformations. Her tenure as President of Geek Squad Services, albeit interim, was particularly instrumental in shaping Best Buy’s service-oriented approach. She recognized the growing importance of tech support and personalized solutions in consumer electronics, a vision that would later influence the company’s broader strategy.
Recognizing that modern consumers demand seamless experiences, Corie championed investments in digital infrastructure. From enhancing Best Buy’s mobile app to integrating AI-driven personalized recommendations, she ensured that technology served to complement, not replace, the human touch. “The experience has to be flawless — regardless of the level of need,” Corie emphasized. One of her most groundbreaking moves was implementing a market-based workforce model, allowing store employees to work across multiple locations. This flexibility not only optimized staffing but also empowered employees to provide consistent, high-quality service to customers wherever they shopped.
Corie has also overseen the expansion of Best Buy’s retail media business, transforming the company into a powerful advertising platform. With brands eager to reach tech-savvy consumers, Best Buy’s vast data and insights have become a valuable asset. This strategic pivot not only diversifies revenue streams but also solidifies Best Buy’s position as an industry leader beyond traditional retail.
So, what’s next for Corie Barry and Best Buy? As AI and emerging technologies continue to reshape consumer habits, Corie remains committed to ensuring that technology feels “more human” in our daily lives. “AI will actually make all of our experiences with technology feel more human,” she predicts. Looking a decade ahead, she envisions a world where technology seamlessly integrates into our lives without overwhelming us. “We need our people to take what they know and translate it to the customer,” she says, emphasizing the role of Best Buy’s workforce in making innovation accessible.
