In the Tata Group’s most significant leadership transition to date, N Chandrasekaran has resigned from both the Chair of the Board of Tata Chemicals and its Board of Directors. The company made this announcement public in a regulatory filing on May 28, 2025. Chandrasekaran is also the current Chair of Tata Sons. He resigned due to “the evolution of my responsibilities and future commitments.”
In a letter to the Tata Chemicals Board, he expressed gratitude for their support during his tenure as Chairman. “After carefully evaluating my current and future commitments, I have decided to step down from the Board. It has been a privilege to chair the Tata Chemicals board. I sincerely appreciate the support and collaboration during my tenure,” he said.
The company quickly announced that another member of the Board of Directors, S. Padmanabhan, will serve as Chairman, effective May 30, 2025. Padmanabhan is a long-time Tata executive who brings considerable leadership and strategy experience.

Moreover, the Board of Directors has confirmed the appointment of Modan Saha as an Additional Director (Non-Executive, Non-Independent), effective May 28, 2025, based on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee.
The Board’s acceptance of Chandrasekaran’s resignation from the Tata Chemicals Board represents a significant shift; however, it demonstrates a greater focus on Tata Sons and the group’s strategic priorities. Therefore, one would expect a smooth transition and continued company traditions of strong governance and leadership.
