YouTube to Use AI to Guess Users’ Ages, Citing Child Safety Goals

YouTube has rolled out an AI system that will evaluate accounts starting from August 13, 2025, to detect any minor users on the platform.  Currently, this is only for a limited users in the US, but in the coming months it will be for all users, worldwide. The step is taken after increasing concerns by parents and lawmakers over the safety of children’s mental health.

The UK government has already brought in the rules to prevent minor users from watching or using prohibited content. Reddit and Discord have started verifying some users under the UK’s Online Safety Act. Also, TikTok uses AI to detect minors, but TikTok’s restricted age is only 13.

How does AI technology verify a user?

YouTube comes with an AI system to detect minors under age 18. The AI system detects the searches of the users, the type of content users watch, and how long their accounts have been active. After detecting a user as a minor, YouTube will automatically apply the restrictions to the platform’s teen safety measures, which include certain kinds of content restrictions, adjusted recommendations, and a prohibition on repetitive watching of certain types of content. YouTube will also disable personalised advertising and will remind users to take breaks.

If AI mistakenly detects an adult as a minor, the user must then verify their identity by submitting a government ID, Credit card details, or a selfie.
