Meta Plans to Launch APAC’s Biggest Subsea Cable in 2028

Meta, the tech giant, has revealed plans to launch Candle, the largest-capacity subsea cable, in 2028. This cable, which can extend up to 8,000 kilometres, aims to enhance connectivity for Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, according to Meta. 

The project will provide about 570 Tbps, serving over 580 million people. Meta said Candle will use 24 fibre-pair tech to match the capacity of its largest cable, Anjana. The cable will be developed with regional telecom partners.

The Company also shared updates regarding the existing subsea projects, including the Bifrost cable system. 

The APAC region hosts a global infrastructure for internet connectivity and offers access to cutting-edge technologies like AI.

The company announced updates on the Bifrost, Echo, and Apricot cables. Bifrost now connects Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the U.S., with Mexico anticipated in 2026. It will deliver over 260 Tbps of redundancy, branching out from earlier transpacific cables. Echo provides 260 Tbps between Guam and California, with potential expansion into Asia.

Meta’s Apricot system has a 12,000 km span, ranging from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore, complementing Bifrost and Echo with 290 TBps of capacity.

Additionally, to develop Hindi language AI chatbots for Indian users, Meta is reportedly hiring contractors in the US at a rate of up to 4,580 rupees per hour, which translates to approximately $55.
