GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to Step Down, Launch New Startup

GitHub’s CEO, Thomas Dohmke, has announced he is stepping down from his role at the Microsoft-owned software development platform. Dohmke’s decision comes as he plans to return to his entrepreneurial roots and start a new venture, but information about his new venture is still undisclosed.

Dohmke, who joined Microsoft after selling his startup HockeyApp in 2015, became GitHub’s product chief and, in November 2021, was appointed as CEO. During his term as CEO, the number of users increased to over 150 million, with GitHub seeing rapid growth. The company also launched major initiatives in artificial intelligence, particularly the Copilot AI coding tool.

He wrote in his blog, “After all this time, my startup roots have taken hold of me and I have decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again.” Dohmke expressed gratitude to the GitHub team and the broader developer community for their achievements and collaboration. He will remain with GitHub’s CEO until the end of 2025 to help guide the transition.

No direct successor will be appointed immediately, though Microsoft is planning to merge GitHub under its CoreAI division. Morio Rodriguez, GitHub’s Chief Product Officer, will now report to the head of product for Microsoft’s AI platform, Asha Sharma.
