
In a powerful display of unity, BRICS nations gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to denounce what they described as a wave of “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures” that could upend global trade. While not directly naming the US or President Donald Trump, the bloc’s draft statement targeted his recent protectionist policies, including a new round of tariffs expected to launch this August.
The leaders voiced “serious concerns” over these moves, warning they could distort trade, reduce global commerce, and fuel economic instability worldwide. Citing rising uncertainty and market volatility, the statement stressed the urgent need for de-escalation and a renewed commitment to inclusive globalisation.

Notably absent were Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with China represented by Premier Li Qiang. Analysts believe this shift highlights a strategic recalibration, particularly as India’s Narendra Modi assumes a more prominent diplomatic role.
With the deadline for Trump’s 90-day tariff pause looming on July 9, BRICS leaders are pushing for cooperative solutions to avoid another trade war.
