EU Pushes Back Against Trump’s Claims of Discriminatory Digital Policies

On Tuesday, the European Commission rejected US President Trump’s allegations that EU digital regulations unfairly disadvantage American tech companies and denied any claims of censorship.

Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on countries implementing digital taxes or regulations, accusing them of targeting US tech firms.

Last week, the US and EU agreed to limit most US tariffs on EU exports to 15%, with digital services receiving minimal attention in the deal.

Trump’s administration has voiced strong objections to the EU’s regulatory efforts on tech giants and online platform content.

On Tuesday, the European Commission reaffirmed its sovereign right to regulate economic activities and dismissed Trump’s assertion that EU digital laws unfairly single out US companies, emphasising these rules apply equally to all firms operating within the EU.

The EU’s recent DSA enforcement actions targeted Chinese-owned AliExpress, Temu, and TikTok, while investigations have been initiated into X and Meta.

The EU pushed back against Zuckerberg’s remarks, asserting that its data regulations do not amount to censorship.

The DSA emphasises that platforms should uphold their guidelines, with the vast majority of EU content moderation done proactively by the platforms.
