Recently, the CEO of Infosys, N. R. Narayana Murthy, stated that Indians need to work 70 hours a week to ensure their place in the global landscape. This sparked a fiery debate online about work-life balance in the corporate environment. Now, global professional services firm Genpact has entered the debate with its new ruling of a 10-hour workday in India. This has brough upon a lot of criticism from employees across India and from various organisations, apart from Genpact.
According to the accounts of various employees of the company on Reddit and Fishbowl, employees have reported heightened pressure, fatigue and a sharp dip in morale. Many people believe that this change, although well within the Indian labour laws, undermines the trends seen in the foreign market, where companies are shifting towards more flexible work models post-pandemic.
A supposed employee of the company left a post on Reddit saying, “The expectation of logging 10 active hours each day is not only unrealistic for many roles, but it also signals a complete disregard for personal time. The ₹3,000 incentive hardly covers the cost of our additional mental and physical effort.”

Another employee said that the internal monitoring system is yet another problem, as even the most minor of deviations are now being categorised as behavioural issues, creating an environment of fear and hyper-surveillance. And the most significant point is that all of this only for a ₹3000 incentive for those who comply.
So far, the company has made no remarks regarding the change in policy.
